Since 2012, Bubba’s Blankets has distributed thousands of blankets to patients battling cancer. This project, founded by Jimmy Myrick Jr., who passed away in 2016 after a 5-year battle with leukemia, was inspired by the simple gift of a blanket. Finding the strength to inspire hope in others fighting cancer, Jimmy distributed cozy blankets to fellow patients. Jimmy’s Foundation continues his charitable giving legacy of love by distributing blankets for UMMC Greenebaum Cancer Center (MD), UPenn Abramson Center (PA), and to Children’s National Hospital Pediatric Oncology (DC) through the EVAN Foundation.
The EVAN Foundation supports groundbreaking neuroblastoma research driven by innovative investigators at leading institutions across the U.S. The Foundation has awarded more than $650,000 in research grants. This includes the Evan Lindberg Neuroblastoma Research Scholar Program at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and research at the Children’s National Hospital (CNH) in Washington, DC. At CNH, the Foundation has made a multi-year commitment to support the work of Anthony Sandler, MD, SVP & Surgeon in Chief. Dr. Sandler and his team are working to develop a neuroblastoma vaccine derived from the tumor tissue of patients.
Building Maintenance Service LLC (BMS) and its subsidiary Hastings Architectural Restoration, are proud and honored to be associated with both Bubba’s Blankets and The Evan Foundation. Now more than ever, it’s important to give back in time, money, and effort to the communities in which we work and serve. Today, BMS collected nearly 100 cozy blankets from Bubba’s Blankets. These blankets will be delivered to The EVAN Foundation this week. The EVAN Foundation sponsors the Treats & Treasures Cart Program on the hematology/oncology units at CNH in DC, CNH satellite location in Rockville, MD, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, The Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI, and Children’s Hospital Colorado and Seattle Children’s Hospital.
At CNH in DC, every hematology/oncology inpatient room is visited weekly with 2 carts filled with a plethora of candy, toys, and now, cozy blankets. Each child and their families can pick whatever they want at no charge. In addition, another Treats & Treasures Cart is made available daily to the CNH DC hematology/oncology outpatient kids. Evan Foundation Co-Founder Wendy Lindberg said “My husband Gavin and I see first-hand how much the kids love Bubba’s Blankets. They really help brighten the days of young childhood cancer patients enduring long and difficult stays in the hospital. We are honored to be able to share Jimmy Myrick’s legacy and we are incredibly grateful to BMS and Hastings for their generous support of The EVAN Foundation.”
